Which plants are suitable for the bathroom?

A bit of greenery in the bathroom – not only does it look nice, it can also significantly improve the indoor climate. However, not all plants are equally suitable for the bathroom. What you should look out for when choosing your “green friends”:

Why you should have plants in the bathroom

Green plants create an exciting, soft contrast to the usually cooler and straighter-looking bathroom tiles. They radiate naturalness. That is reassuring. Studies have also shown that looking at plants alone is good for our psyche. They strengthen our attention and reduce stress. If these aren’t the best reasons to bring a little leafy green into your bathroom! But not every plant is suitable for this.

The bathroom can be quite a challenge in terms of air conditioning. The conditions here are completely different to the rest of the living area. It is more humid, warmer and in many cases also darker. Choosing the right plant for the bathroom therefore also depends very much on how bright and large the bathroom is.

Plants for dark bathrooms

  • Nest fern (Asplenium nidus)
  • Cobbler’s palm (Aspidistra)
  • Ivy (Epipremnum aureum)
  • Zamia (Zamioculcas)
  • Monocot (Spathiphyllum)
  • Mountain palm (Chamaedorea elegans)

Plants for bright bathrooms

  • Tillandsia (Tillansia)
  • Sword fern (Nephrolepis exaltata)
  • Aloe (Aloe vera)
  • Window leaf (Monstera deliciosa)
  • Bow hemp (Sansevieria)
  • Heartleaf plant (Hoya kerrii)

Bathrooms that are completely without daylight are not suitable for greening with real plants. Then you can at least achieve the decorative effect with high-quality artificial plants. If there is a window, but it is rather small, the bathroom is considered semi-shaded to shaded. You can either use the plants mentioned above or get an additional plant lamp.

It is easier with light-colored bathrooms. But here, too, it is important to consider the overall indoor climate. Showers, baths and heated air create a tropical to subtropical climate. Many green plants love these conditions. Zamioculcas is perfect for anyone without green fingers. It looks pretty and is relatively undemanding, the same applies to the monocot.

Important tip

All plants, even if they are perfect for the bathroom, have one thing in common. They do not like draughts. Of course a bathroom needs fresh air. However, care should be taken to ensure that the living decorative elements are not placed directly in the draught. This is essential for the well-being of the plants, especially during the cooler months of the year.
